Clemson Punter

Just thinking about how there hasn't been much said about the change from Will Spiers to whomever (Jackson Smith or other?) this fall. Seems to me that Spiers was extremely important in our defensive capability to hold on to leads in all of those close games. Not claiming to know much about punting, but I was constantly expecting the worst outcome from all of those third down conversion issues. TV shots made me wince at how close the rushers came. Spiers didn't appear to have a cannon leg or Dale Hatcher hang time, but time and again the other team took over on their side of the field. I can't say there were no shanks, but I don't remember one.
Pressure on the punter by Ga Tech might turn our Labor Day game upside down if we haven't given it enough attention by opening night or a young guy gets the yips. Hope not!

I would expect Potter or Swanson to eventually win that job.

Then I would expect we're going to have some issues early on. Don't know if Jeff Simmons knows Frank Beamer -

Report from day1 on Potter and Swanson was concerning. (Referece TCI ) Way too soon for panic, but both of them struggled? Poor punting can kill a great defense. Plus not sure there is anything that can really change punting performance either they can or they can't.

I'm not diving much into punting after one day and one drill. I'll give you my opinion on that after I've seen all we're allowed to watch. If neither of those guys can win the job maybe they look to the freshman

Weren’t Swanson and the new freshman both highly rated high school punters? Dabo said Day 1 was a disaster but they responded on Day 2. This sounds like growing pains and need for confidence building. I think they get this ironed out before NCSt.

I hope Potter doesn’t win the job as a result of the others not stepping up. I’m sure showing off his punting skills to NFL scouts would be a bonus, but I’d prefer he continue to focus on kickoffs and FG’s. Those are the talents that will give him a shot at an NFL career.

Maybe the Day 1 performance was a blessing in disguise. It got a lot of unexpected attention, and we will likely be ready for any "Ga Tech" kicking game stunts intending to ramp up the punt rush. Still there will probably be some special team "surprises" Geoff Collins knows he needs a win over someone big; and there really is no time better to try to steal one with special teams than the opening game.
